The California Chapter of the National DeSoto Club wants to put together a proposal those the 2017 convention (the one AFTER Timonium MD) in San Diego. If we come up with a reasonable plan, we plan to submit it to the NDC national board, and if they like it best among all submissions, the 2017 convention will be in San Diego.
I've talked to several hotels, and some have told me they can give better room rates if we meet in off season, like first half of December, or January or February. I think we normally would not want an annual meet in winter, but having lived in Minnesota for 17 years and Maryland for 10, I can see an argument for a winter meet in San Diego. Arguments for are lower cost. Arguments against include more difficult travel if driving, even fewer DeSotos likely from central and eastern regions, school likely in session.
If you read this, and if you would consider attending a San Diego convention in 2017, I value your comments on this idea. Please post them as a reply to this message or email me at drjohn96@me.com.

I'm still affected by the "kids still in school" dilemma. Michaela and I have enjoyed the convention becoming a fun father/daughter thing. However, sometimes, change is good!

It's supposed to be fun!

Thanks Tim. Any others have opinions about this? I'm meeting with one hotel today.

A winter "get away" meet in January or February sounds like a nice change. This does not have to become the norm but a trial of sorts. I would not take my car from KY to CA so we would be flying to the meet regardless.
The AACA's winter meet, always in a warm weather climate, seems pretty popular with snow birds and others' seeking relief from winter weather up north.
Go for it!

John, I like the idea of San Diego and for us the winter dates would work well. We always go south for a while in the winter just to get a break from the weather anyway so why not San Diego? It would also give us another opportunity to do Route 66.
There has been quite a bit of discussion at other conventions about having one after school starts and if I remember correctly that is the biggest concern. It is a problem for anyone with children still in school or teachers etc.. I don't think there was ever an agreement on whether that would effect attendance that much.
I don't think the time of year will have much effect on the number of DeSoto's coming from the mid-west or the east. The Reno and Albuquerque conventions had very few cars from those areas so there probably aren't going to be very many regardless of the time of year.
I like the idea of having another convention in the west. We have had several recently in the mid-west and 2016 in Maryland so I think it is time to have one out your way. I say go for it but I am neutral on the time of year. Do what you think is best.
I like the idea of a ndc meeting in San Diego
the last time i visited that area was 40 years ago in the hot summer
A good combination with Vegas , the dessert, nat parks etc is possible
I am not aware of the weather conditions but probably better than with us in the Netherlands.

I think this is a great idea. It gets pretty cold in Nova Scotia in Jan & Feb and I would love to see that woody wagon again. Barrie Campbell
I'm not convinced a winter convention would work for the reasons already posted above and for the fact that many people up north will already have their cars put away for the winter. Besides that, many people are still reeling financially after the holidays are over and may not be able to afford that time of year.
Original NDC guidelines said they should be held from June to August, but I know there was some discussion on that after I left the board and don't know what was decided.
I would love to see San Diego. Temperature there is mild all year. Why not keep the convention planned during the summer months???

Free room and board! Yeah, I like the idea.
