The wiring on my 48' Custom is pretty frail. What is available out here to do a re-wire and keep the 6V? Also, should I consider a complete upgrade to 12V? Thanks!
YnZ's in California and Rhode Island Wiring are generally accepted as the two best (and equal in terms of quality and pricing) sources for original-style wiring harnesses.
I have never had a 6V car but from everything I have read, as long as you have good wiring and battery cables (these are especially important to be of the proper size/gauge and in good condition) and are not running a lot of aftermarket accessories, such as A/C, the 6V system is more than capable of starting and running the car. I believe that many 12V conversions are done either simply because it's a mainstream idea that it's an upgrade or because it masks other problems, such as wiring and cables that are not adequate.
Agree with David's response. My '55 is still 6-volt and does fine. Many years ago I replaced the battery cables with proper gauge OEM spec cables and religiously use a battery maintainer when the car is not in operation. The maintainer helps extend battery life.
Switching to 12-volt will require changes to your lighting, gauges, and other electrical items, so it's not as easy as it sounds.
