What newer cheaper starter will replace this one. It just stopped turning... not hot,,,, nothing ,,,just stopped. Still tries to engage,,,, just no whirl? I need a newer alternative. Does anyone know a rebuilder of these. ebay...$425.00 too much.

Hello Dick...depending on where you live there is likely an electrical repair shop that can help rebuild your original starter and/or solenoid.  Although it's an old part the technology has not changed that much over the years.  Most larger cities have such shops and many have been in business for years.  In rural areas, these shops specialize in servicing farm and industrial equipment, much of which is older production.  Another source of recommendation is from a local old car club in your area.  Please let us know your location and the internet may reveal a source.

Mark

Dick,

I don't know of a specific rebuilder to recommend (I know they are out there, but I haven't had to have anything rebuilt since our local guy retired), but along the lines of what Mark suggested, you could look in the NDC roster (if you haven't received one yet, you should soon) and see if there are any local DeSoto owners to send an email to for recommendations that are close enough for you to drop it off. I think the last time I had one rebuilt (about 10 years ago), it was around $100-150 if I recall correctly.

@johnnyreb I'd agree - either he didn't want to or he doesn't use the internet to locate parts needed for the rebuild that his normal suppliers may not have.
