I don't know much about the Fluid Drive design to help with your issue, but that is a beautiful '53 Sportsman!
Doug-
I've attached some Fluid Torque Drive info from the service manual that may help us out.
According to the manual (p. 67), the engine fed Fluid Torque Drive was only used on the V8 engines. This doesn't mean that your 6 doesn't have it- stranger things have happened.
There were 2 types of Fluid Torque Drives- Pump fed and Engine fed. The pump fed had an oil cooler mounted on the front of the engine (p. 103, fig. 59), and an oil reservoir behind the torque converter (p. 104, fig. 62). Exploded view p. 106.
The engine fed system will not have the cooler or reservoir. Exploded view p. 116. The torque converter to engine adaptor will have channels in it to line up with the engine oil feed and return ports (see exploded view). There is an internal pressure regulator in the torque converter.
Take a look at your plate and torque converter assembly to determine which system you have.
I hope this information is helpful.
Glenn
