1937 DeSoto 2 Door

By Merri Hanjora mhanjora@civitasmedia.com

October 18, 2014

CONTINENTAL — The DeSoto was an American automobile manufactured and marketed by the DeSoto Division of the Chrysler Corporation from 1928 to 1961. The DeSoto was founded by Walter Chrysler on Aug. 4, 1928, and introduced for the 1929 model year. It was named after Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. It was in competition with General Motors, Studebaker and Willys-Knight, in the mid-price class. In 1937, the DeSoto was restyled and production doubled to 81,775, which moved DeSoto from 13th to 12th in the industry. For the first time since 1933, DeSoto outsold Nash.

Joan (Shafer) Halbgewoks, of Continental owns this 1937 two-door coach DeSoto. Her grandfather, Lewis Shafer, purchased the car from Shisler Auto Sales, in Oakwood. The car has been in the family for 77 years. Joan has owned it since 1965. She remembers the trips from Oakwood to visit relatives in Findlay when she was a child sitting on the large back seat floor playing and enjoying the trip. Restoration is in progress by Paul Luersman, master mechanic at Dupont Service Company.

That is pretty neat Mark. Is your post just to share with everyone?

I was also wondering where Continental is? Sorry, I just do not see it anywhere or know.

Paul,

Article posted for informational purposes only. Bob Terpak tells me we did not have the dealer name on the dealer list, so that was an added benefit.

Continental Ohio is in northwest Ohio, near Toledo.

Mark
