I have some play in my '55s idler. Does anyone have experience with a steering idler repair kit? I would seem to be a viable option but the workshop manual states that replacement is the only repair possible. However new ones are very expensive. Are the kits OK?

All thoughts appreciated

Hi Clive,

I've never tried the repair kits nor do I know someone that has. Considering the cost of the newly manufactured replacement idler arms, it seems to be worth a try. There are multiple old stock repair kits on eBay.

The Moog p/n for the NORS idler arm is K-189. This website popped up when I searched that p/n. Might be an out-of-date website but worth a try. They show a K-189 for < $100. http://www.antiquedodgeparts.com/antiquesuspensionparts.com/moog_no.htm

Good luck!

Mark

Good Morning, Clive-

This is from the 1956 service manual. Although it states that replacement is the only option, the exploded view appears to have replaceable bushings.

Let us know what you find out.

Thank you for your replies.

A look at the kit I bought indicates that it will not easily fit unless I am missing something obvious. The combined stacks of ball bearings and spacers etc fit between either the arm and centre link or the arm and idler bracket. However they will not fit in the space available and still allow the same thread engagement with the existing bushes. See attached images. I haven't dismantled anything yet for fear of doing something irreversible. In a closer study of the existing bushes (in diagrams and pictures) they appear to be similar to those used on suspension pivots and the actual pivot action is via the threads and not what at first glance might look like bearing material. Hopefully a veteran mechanic will highlight something I've missed! Images attached for info.

PS Overall the kit doesn't look very satisfactory as sealing looks very poor but having said that it was the 50s after all and even now it was only(!) $30. In many ways it is more an aftermarket kit to  "improve steering" rather than a repair kit as such
