The Chrysler parts should interchange. The book calls for part number 947550 which was superceded by part number 1752623 which is described in the book as "Universal Joint Package". bradnosparts.com shows this part available as does collectorsautosupply.com . Confirmation needs to be done to make sure this is what you need. I look forward to your return to the road when you get back.

Thanks, Tim. I'm really bummed about having to temporarily postpone the final 240 miles but I could not miss my flight back to work today. I have only another hour or so before I board my overseas flight here in Atlanta, GA.
By the way, I keep reminding myself that "it's supposed to be fun" like in your signature.
Most Sincerely,

I might have a little time before getting back on my ship in a day or so. If I can, I will post some more photos of our trip from my hotel room in Macae, Brasil.
We still want to finish the trip to Maine but it has to resume after I return in December.
Most Sincerely,
Ralph M Bohm

UPDATE:
My friend Dennis in new Hampshire who has our Desoto has found 2 U-joints from as many different places. It sounds like we have the correct parts but in the meantime, I had to fly back to work in Brasil so, when I get back, Alina and I will resume the trip in December.

I am a few posts behind, and just looked at the photos of the universal joint. It has been years, since I replaced the joints on my '52 Firedome, and if I remember, they sure look the same to me.
I remember the 'C' shaped pieces that hold the blocks in place. I have parts books, that I can verify, when I get home.
At the time I replaced mine, it was a major problem to find the correct joint. It seems to be that the 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder used different joints, both front and rear.
Again, I will check when I get home tonight. I should really know this for a fact, I am the '52 Advisor.

After crawling under my '52 FireDome ( 8 cyl.), I can say, my joints are different than yours.
Further searching, has me believing, that 40-52 Desoto's, as well as 40-53 Chyryslers were the same. This only applies to 6 cylinder 4 door sedans.
I have one more thing I would like to check, to be sure. I have a 52' Firedome Parts car, that I sold the driveshaft to another member, and I would like to verify, that the joints on that car, are the same as mine.
For some crazy reason, I remember taking apart a joint like the one in the photo.
I won't be able to look until this week-end, but when I do, I will post the outcome.
After looking at all the parts books that I have, (a lot) I am now confused what joints should be on my car!
Have to love the hobby !

Hello Mark and thank you for checking.
I am now out of the country for my work and will be gone for 4 weeks so we have a little time.
At this writing, I believe my good friend in NH has located 2 U-joints abut as you probably also know, you never can count your U-joints before they hatch.
Let's see what next week brings.
Most Sincerely,

I just looked at my '52 parts car. The joints are the same as my other '52. Thay ARE different than yours. I thought I had seen your type before.

Hola All
My Revised April 1 1949 dated De Soto Passenger Car Parts List ( aka S11
Parts Book ) shows the needed U-Joint is only for 7 Passenger Sedans -
Limo's - Suburan's. The words of Sever Duty - Police or Taxi are not shown.
The 1949 Chrysler Passenger Car Parts List ( aka C45 - C46 and C47 Parts
Book ) shows the same part numbered item for 6 cylinder sized powered
like long wheel-base Chrysler's.
To me this means an 1950 Carryall is included since this is what is shown all
dried up.
There does not appear to be any lub/ grease fittings so any of this is only
while "on the bench" .

Hey Mark and Rodger!
How are you guys doing? I am on board the drill ship and happy to say that I DO have access to the 'net so I can post away about the road trip.
I should change the title to read "we May just do it...in a few lifetimes".
Well, who would've thunk we would drag out this story so long. don't worry, we will sell the movie rights and it'll know the new James Bond Movie right out of 1st place!

Universal Joint Cross
Ralph
The cross part and roller bearings of all of the Six Cylinder U-Joints all have the same MoPar Part Number for every same era Chrysler or De Soto ( 857 997 ).
It is only The Block Assy Design ( x2 each ) that is not the same.
This means if your Six Cylinder Block Assy Units are not completely wrecked/ destroyed they will accept the parts from any other six cylinder unit ... and you
can drive home the remaining 240'ish miles.

Hello Brother Rodger!
Cool. Actually, Dennis, my long-time friend in NH had located the parts and as soon as I get home from Brasil, will resume and complete the trip. I will ask him where he'd obtained the parts and make sure we get that info posted here for others possibly needing it in the future.
Most Sincerely,

Ralph,
While in Florida for vacation, my wife wanted to visit the local flea market. While killing time in one of an endless series of junk shops, I found this new Wedding Congratulations card that is so apropos that it is spooky! I did not scan the inside as it simply says "Congratulations", but the scan below shows the front and back of the card. Please send me your mailing address and I will send this card to Alina and you as another keepsake from your memorable trip.
