Ralph, hope you can get the starter repaired and that solves the problem. We are all pulling for you and would like to see you complete the trip.

Thanks, Les.
We're going to give it our best. So far, I think we've been very successful as we have met great folks and I can assure you, if my work schedule will allow it, we WILL be at next year's Convention being held in Minnesota in July. :-)

Most Sincerely,

Thanks, Darin but we are getting ours rebuilt here in Jefferson City, MO. It should be completed within the hour and we are ready to head back to the shop from the motel right now.

A quick update:
We got our starter back from Mike Carver of Carver's Starter and Alternator Service in Jefferson City, MO. at around 5pm and after re-installing it and while we were at it, replacing our points and condenser, "hit the Starter".
Good news: the Carryall came back to life! We paid the $410 and off we went.
The car is running better than ever for the most part. Just this morning however, we are experiencing some skipping and I am sure it is a problem with that small mounting screw for the condenser. The plate is stripped and I think it's causing our skipping. We'll have to get this trivial - but important - issue resolved later today.
We are now at the Dixie Truckstop in McLean, Illinois eating an All-American breakfast and straddling U.S. Route 66.
After we eat, we're heading east on Route 136 to pick up State Highway 24.

Most Sincerely,

We're getting ready to head further east.
In Smethport, Pennsylvania; had stopped for the night as the weather turned and sleet was collecting on the windshield.
No wipers so I RainXed the front glass but because of the shape of the hood, wind does not want to hit the windshield enough to keep the glass clear.

Anyway, we will try to get most, if not all of the trip completed today. Actually, if we are a bit lucky, we will only need one more night.

I'm coming down with the flu.

The 'ole Desoto is running pretty good. But no more than 53 MPH and then there's quite a bit of vibration past 35 MPH usually more so when climbing grades. It does mostly go away at 50 MPH.

It's a rather high-velocity vibration, one that someone would experience from the driveline, like a universal joint. But back in Gardner, Tim Mabry and I checked them and they looked - and felt - good.

There was discovered an exceptional amount of play in the ring and pinion set but we only topped off the fluid. Would something in the back end of this fluid drive transmission cause this type of vibration, anyone know?

Okay, time for us to leave the motel (Smethport Motel is a very nice stop actually) and grabbing a very hot cup of tea.

Ralph and Alina

Most Sincerely,

Hi Rick!
Sounds about right. We get serious vibration from around 37 MPH up through 45 and then sometimes it goes away or is hardly discernible at those speeds. We get mostly smooth running at around 53 and we haven't driven over that except momentarily when we reached 55 and once hit 58 MPH!. We've been driving secondary roads all the way across whenever possible so almost no Interstate since Denver. We are no in Vermont!

Most Sincerely,
