Hi all, since my poor car will never be a show car and I prefer safety over stock, can anyone tell me what dual master cylinder (M/C) would be a good replacement for my single one? I had read in a different posting regarding a '55 that a '76 Dart M/C would work as long as it were for manual brakes, all drums. I also read that as early as a '67 tandem M/C would work but they used one from a W200 series. The difference seems to be in the bore size. If you all have any advice, that would be great. Thanks in advance!
I installed a 1976 Dodge Dart power drum brake dual master cylinder on our 59 Firesweep. It works great.I also installed a brake light sensor on a T-block tied in to the new line.It helps to adjust the shoes all the way out, locking the wheels, while you bleed the brakes. This will give you a hard pedal when you'er done bleeding.Readjust the brake shoes again. The front port on a dual master is for the rear brakes & the rear port is for the front brakes.Adjust the brake pushrod with about 1/8 in.play.Good luck!
Ron, thanks for the advice! I just ordered the wheel cylinders for the front brakes from Bernbaum's. I had thought about doing a conversion to disc using AAJ but that was too much money at one time. I'm hoping for decent stopping power from these, that's all. I'll let you know how it goes. Any suggestions for cleaning the backing plates and getting the axle grease off?
Spray the backing plates with a degreaser called Purple Power. Can be purchased at any Advanced, Pep Boys any auto parts store. Use it straight - I use an old windex bottle which works well. Follow the directions - I was happy. Good luck! Ron
