I had a question over on Facebook asking where the '93 Convention was held, and I don't know the answer!
It's supposed to be fun!
1949 De Soto Custom Convertible (project)
Dayton, OH
Without taking the time, to look them up, in past magazines..................Where have they been, and in what years?
I used to be able to do this, without looking,.......but I am getting older.
New people might enjoy seeing where we have been, and where we need to go.
Mark
The 1995 Convention in Asheville, NC, was the tenth annual meet, the first having been in 1986 in Baltimore. We listed the previous nine meet locations on the back of the convention tee shirt. When I get a chance I will dig out one of those shirts (they are stored under the bed with the summer clothes) and list the first ten locations.

Thanks!
Interesting there has never been one in New England or New York.

Chris,
re: "Interesting there has never been one in New England..."
So when will we see your proposal for a Convention in CT?
Mark
Thanks Bill,
As I look back...............for me, it began in Chicago, 1987, the year of the BIG flood.
Since then, I have attended a mere 14 conventions. Mostly in the mid-west, but I did attend Albuquerque, New Mexico and Waldorf, Maryland.
I wish more members could/would attend these events. They are really enjoyable. If members are ever looking for parts, literature, ect.....if it is not there, someone will know someone who has it.

Interesting suggestion Mark. I think a great convention would be in the Boston area with a bus tour (you don't want to drive into downtown Boston) to some of the many historic sites including the USS Constitution. Also a driving tour to Plimouth Plantation where the "residence" are role acting and living in 1627 with no knowledge of anything modern. Or, maybe a driving tour to visit the oldest wood frame house in North America the Fairbanks House. Built circa 1636-1640 and it is now a museum open to guided tours. Yeah, the last suggestion is a bit self serving as it was built by my ancestors but it is an interesting bit of our history.
Well since one cannot solo a convention and I am not aware of any New England Club to do the hosting....
BUT it really would be a great place as there is so much history here in southern New England, even if the traffic is a bit nuts in the summer:)

When did they change the rules?
It used to be called being hosted by "Member at large" where a member and lots of other volunteers got together and hosted a show. It does not require a local club or at least it didn't.
IE: Rapid City SD 2002
I don't even think there was a member in town. I was the Member at large living 600+ miles away from the show site and members from many surrounding states stepped up to do their part. And at the car show many more from around the nation came forward to help. The biggest problem we had is between the planning stages and the actual event 9/11 happened and lots of people did not want to travel less than a year later.
On a side note for anyone that did attend Rapid City in 2002. My wife actually caved in and let me look into hosting another show in Rapid City. We went up last spring to visit the sites and had meetings with the Convention and visitors bureau as well as the host hotel. RCCVB thought they could get permission to get us back into the memorial park across from the host hotel for show day. It must have failed since I never did hear back from them or the host hotel with their end of the proposal.
I have just started a new job so the idea of hosting another event has been pushed back.It is a hell of a lot of work but very rewarding and Rapid City works very well as a convention site.
Lee, we have very fond memories of the Rapid City convention. All conventions have been good but a few stand out for us because the area had something historic or of special interest.
I have no interest in doing a convention because I don't think I have the organizational skills and we are getting to old to take on a project like that. But when New England came up I got to thinking about where would be a good place and Boston came to mind. We go out there every few years for a family reunion at the Fairbanks House and when I was in the Air Force was stationed on Cape Cod so I know a little about the area. There is so much history there and Plimouth Plantation that I mentioned is awesome and would make a great driving tour from Boston suburbs. There is also a replica of the Mayflower in Plymouth where the sailors are role acting and is very interesting. And of course, Plymouth Rock.
While we are pretty much snowed in here in Michigan (check out the 200 vehicle pile-up on I-94 about 45 miles from us) and have time on my hands I looked into a possible guided bus tour to historic sites in and around Boston and they are available. I also took a look at some hotels in the Boston suburbs and that also looked promising. The biggest negative is traffic out there. It is congested and you don't want to drive into downtown Boston. We take the train in from Dedham.
Just an idea if someone wants to run with it.
Chris - anyone can host one of our conventions; it doesn't have to be a chapter of the NDC. The 2014 convention was hosted by Tim Fagan and his family with help from some others, but there is no chapter in Indiana.
Les - the problem I see with having one of our conventions in Boston (or anywhere in New England) is having to get past New York City to get there. I've been told that many of our members will not drive their De Sotos in nor near NYC (as well as in Boston).
I would love (and would be willing to help out as much as I can from Ohio) to see and have one of our conventions in either upstate NY or somewhere in New England, but I haven't received any bids from anyone in those areas.

Actually Boston is far enough North of NYC that only those coming from southeastern coastal states would go near NYC and it is easy to go around it. Congestion is a problem almost anywhere in that area but when we go to Dedham it is a Western suburb and traffic probably isn't any worse than it was at Waldorf, MD or Charleston. But you are right about driving into Boston I would not do it even in a modern car. I was thinking the suburbs for a host hotel. But, until someone is willing to host it in that area it is all irrelevant.
It seems that when we have a convention that isn't in the East or Mid-West attendance is down. Albuquerque and Reno come to mind with less than thirty cars. I think the Mackinaw City, St Ignace, Mackinaw Island area in Michigan would be another great place for a convention but how many would drive way up there?
