Hello Fellow Members,

As the '55 model year coordinator, I received an inquiry from a fellow '55 owner with a starting issue. He believed the problem was a bad starter relay so I shipped him a used unit - condition unknown - with plans to pay a set price if it worked. This is the relay never manufactured in the aftermarket so new units are difficult to find and expensive when located. The used unit made no difference so the problem is likely elsewhere, and I suspect a bad starter solenoid. I'm at best a shade-tree mechanic so asking for input and suggestions here. Following is a summary of the problem:

"The car has a new battery and the starter has been rebuilt. When the key is turned to start position the starter engages but will not disengage until the battery cable is disconnected."

Thanks in advance for your feedback and suggestions.

Mark K.

Hmmm, rebuilt starter? Sounds like a weak starter. This may sound counter-intuitive, but a weak starter often won't disengage.

Good luck
Steve

Mark,
Here is agood example as to why it was a good idea to move the NDC library in with the De Soto Adventures editorial office here in Mason, Ohio.
I have attached three (pertinent) pages from the library's 1954-1955 De Soto Shop Manual.
I will also attach them to a personal email to you.

Geoff

Thanks Geoff and Ron! I've got the same manual but never gave it a thought to crack the cover. Appreciate the quick and detailed response.

Mark
