For the past several years I have organized a salvage yard tour in late winter / early spring for our local AACA chapter. Junkyarding has been a favorite old car activity of mine for decades and these tours have been a favorite of our local chapter members.

This year we plan to visit Shore's yard in Modoc, IN. As part of the process, I usually schedule a scouting mission to take some photos, review logistics, meet the yard owner, etc. During this year's scouting trip, I snapped these photos of some derelict DeSotos in their final resting place. Not much left to any of them but at least they have not yet met the crusher. You gotta' love that young tree sprouting from the tailfin antenna hole.

Interesting indeed. Am I correct in assuming these cars/parts are for sale?

Fred,

Yes, everything appears to be for sale. In fact, that explains why the cars are so picked over. The owner of the yard is an extremely nice and accommodating gentleman and anyone appears to be welcome almost any time. He's had visitors from Europe and other areas of the globe buy parts and ship them home.

As yards like this are getting harder and harder to find, they appear to fall into two categories. Yards like Shore's that let everyone in to roam at their pleasure and the "collections" owned by eccentric individuals that strictly limit access to the yard. The cars in the former yards are picked clean and the others, well...nobody really knows.

Must not be a Northern Indiana town. There would have been much more cancer ... Cars of that era would have been much worse after just five or six years!
