The town of De Soto, Iowa, will be celebrating their 150th birthday on 23 June this year, and they would love to have a lot of De Soto automobiles in their parade that day. The celebration will actually begin on the 22nd with an ice cream social that Friday evening for their high school reunion from 5 PM to 8 PM at the De Soto Intermediate School located at 317 Spruce St. The parade on Saturday will be at 10 AM with the cars lining up at 9:15 in the school’s parking lot. The parade will then proceed to the town’s Little Bridge Park about a mile south of the school. After the parade, a couple of blocks away from the park, there will be the Car Show – Show & Shine in front of the City Hall located at 405 Walnut St. This car show is just for fun – there will be no awards. Back at the park, from 11 AM to 4 PM, there will be face painting, rock wall climbing, fire & rescue simulator, a magician, jugglers, balloon animals, food vendors, etc. And all of that is free – well, except for the food vendors.
At 5 PM, at Walnut St and Madison Ave near city hall, there will be a beer garden, music, and food from the Ambro’s Bar & Grill. Then, from 7 to 11, they plan to have a street dance with music provided by the Richard Paul Band, members of the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. At dusk, around 9:45, they plan to have a fireworks display.
You can stay in De Soto at the Countryside Inn, 1204 Guthrie St., 515-834-9140. Of course, if you prefer a larger variety of places to stay, the town of De Soto is only about 15 miles west of Des Moines.
So if you’d like to be a part of De Soto, Iowa’s history, and show off your De Soto in De Soto, then please let Kelli Olson know you plan to be there. You can reach her via her e-mail at kjolson.ko@gmail.com or call her at 515-559-6213.
Just a reminder that this is coming up soon.
If any NDC members do make it to De Soto Iowa for their celebration, please take photos and write something up for the club's magazine; thanks.
