KOKOMO, Ind. — A granite monument marking the Indiana site where an inventor drove one of the first automobiles was knocked over in a crash and needs major repairs.
Authorities say the monument in Kokomo to Elwood Haynes' 1894 trial run of his automobile was hit over the weekend by a driver who was hospitalized from his injuries.
Howard County Historical Society director Kelly Karickhoff said she’s worried that the monument erected in 1922 sustained extensive damage.
It was unclear whether the city owns the monument, although Pioneer Auto Club member Tim Rivers said it would help in making repairs.
Haynes donated his first car to the Smithsonian Institution in 1910. His company built cars in Kokomo into the 1920s.
Mark,I googled the Kokomo Tribune to read the article and in today's paper they say the city is going to try to collect from the drivers insurance company. Apparently the City does own the monument and hopefully the insurance company will pay to repair it.
