I am looking for parts for rebuidling brakes on a 1956 Firedome 4 door hardtop
Any suggestions on parts and procedures would be apprecatied.
I found Kanter has 6 wheel cylinders (2 per wheel front) for $198 and a brake rebuiding kit for $224 that seems to include wheel cylinders, shoes, springs and master cylinder. Appears to be a bargain but not sure if it fits the car. One notation lists Chrysler and Dodge for the years but not DeSoto.
Maybe someone haad gotten parts from NAPA or other source. I am looking for wheel cylinders and shoes.
thanks for help

It's hard to beat Kanters prices Chrysler wheel clyn.will fit DeSoto
Mike,
Check out the "Vendors" link along the left side of the website. Kanter is there but so are others. Also, see my post titled "Vintage Parts Sources" for several additional links, again, which includes Kanter. Link here: http://desoto.org/phpbbforum/viewto ... f=1&t=4052
A decent NAPA counter person should be able to get most of what you need including cylinders, kits, hoses, etc. Shoes may be hard to find at NAPA but several sets are currently up on eBay for reasonable prices. '55 and '56 shoes do not interchange; the brake system was redesigned in '56 but as Rick states '56 Chrysler and DeSoto brake components are interchangeable.
You may also need a puller to remove the tapered fit rear brake drum. The Vendors link will provide a web address for Club member Les Fairbanks who sells a custom made puller kit that works very well...so I've been told. Good luck!

I think I got all of my wheel cylinders from NAPA, and had the original brake shoes religned by them, too.
Kanters new stuff is chinese import. My NAPA stuff was still USA, iirc.
It's supposed to be fun!
1949 De Soto Custom Convertible (project)
you've just made up my mind.
NAPA for me
thanks
I just thought i would throw this out there. Autozone sells the same part, but cheaper. NAPA wants like $82 for my rear wheel cylinder, and Autozone is asking $70.
Just throwin it out there.
And I'll add this...
If you are a AAA member and show your card at NAPA, you should receive a 7% discount on most parts. I've done it when ordering miscellaneous parts, even special orders.
