I thought I'd share a photo of the bent valve rods that were in my 59 Firesweep engine; the bottom rod is present for comparison purposes.
Note: one was bent (third from the top) so much that it actually was chafing on the sides of its shaft.
For that longest time, I wondered why the right side of the engine emitted a clacking, rapping, etc. sound, but it minimized in volume once it got up to operating temp. The noise was bad around the fuel pump area, so I R&R'd the pump and, sure enough, the sound was still there!
Long story short, I found a mechanic, yes, with gray hair, and he quickly discoved the misshapen rods.
So, I am happy to report all is well with the engine and I'm looking forward to enjoying it for many more miles.
What is the usual cause of this? Would it be spark plug wires on the wrong terminals and/or the timing is way off? I bring this up since there was a post concerning location of spark plug wires.

This is one of those things that happen when the operator over-rev's
The RPM's of the engine - Times The Crank Shart to Cam Shaft

The most common cause of this on a B block MoPaR would be turning the engine over with stuck valves.
Have a nice day
