If you attended the 2014 Convention in Ft. Wayne you no doubt heard about Ferd Driver's unfortunate mishap on the Ohio Turnpike. Ferd's '52 Custom Sedan was rear-ended in a rainstorm by a Dodge Ram pick-up. The impact burst the gas tank and the car ignited, totaling the car. Fortunately, Ferd and Thelma were able to escape the wreck with little more than the clothes on their back. Ferd is still recovering from injuries suffered in the wreck but has found himself a new ride, a very nice '55 Fireflite hardtop.
Today, I saw another sad story on the web. Below are two links to a New Jersey newspaper's online site with the story of a '51 DeSoto (the story misidentifies the car as a '50) totaled by a minivan driver that ran off the road and broadsided the helpless DeSoto. Fortunately, nobody was in the DeSoto at the time. The deceased former owner's children were offering the car for sale "to a good home", but alas it now appears it will end up at the crusher.
Here is an excerpt from the story. Perhaps somebody that visits this site knew the former owner?
Dan Wyant Jr., whose taxidermy shop is nearby, said the car had been his father's "pride and joy," but Dan Wyant Sr. died last year and no one in the family shared Dad's passion for the car, which had been his retirement project. So in August it was parked in front of CARS Auto Body and offered for sale.
Doug North of CARS Auto Body said it was taking so long to sell it because Wyant wanted it to go "to a good home." The asking price was $13,500. The elder Wyant thought so much of the car that its likeness was etched onto his tombstone. When Bloomsbury celebrated its centennial in 2005, the grand marshal drove the DeSoto in the parade, Wyant said.

That minivan must've been traveling well above the speed limit to become airborne and then land on the Desoto. What a shame ! I hope the minivan's owner is relieved of a substantial amount of money as a result of their carelessness.

Somebody ought to sneak in there and unbolt the grille before some Mercury owner comes and gets it....
It's supposed to be fun!
