I am new to these engines. Is there a special long narrow tool to push the spark plug wire onto the plug? I can push the rubber cover on but getting the actual metal wire connector onto the plug is tough and hard to tell if it is really attached.

your spark plug wires should be run through these insulators. They are often brittle and easily broken.

It is a challenge, to be sure, and I have small hands - which for this job is an asset. The secret I've found is having good, solid, correct plug insulators, either bakelite or ceramic. With the proper wire end threaded through the insulator, you guide the insulator over the plug end and push down on the top of the insulator. That usually guides the metal wire end over the spark plug tip. Occasionally, you have to slightly open the metal wire end so it goes on easier. I'm no tech wizard so perhaps some of the more skilled technicians that visit this site will have more sage advice.

Thank you everyone. This makes some sense. The engine has some cheap local auto parts store wires with rubber insulators that bend and flex all over the place making it near impossible to push onto the plug.
Looks like Bernbaum's has all the parts, time to place an order.
