Were there multiple vendors for the 55 Desoto power steering pump ? I was under the impression that Eaton was the sole provider for that year. Can someone confirm or deny this ?

Ron,

The '55 - '56 parts books shows only one pump p/n for all '55 models. It is the same p/n for all '55 MoPar products. The pump p/n changes for 1956.

Where can you find remanufactured pumps for the 55 desoto? Or at least used ones? Been looking for a while now, no luck...

if you already have a pump, Steer and Gear may be able to rebuild it.

All - thanks for the feedback on sources and a place for remanufacturing my steering pump!

One more question - it may be a bit off topic but it is part of the steering system - where is the best place to obtain a center link? There are several places and it appears that I would need to send in my old link to be reworked. I would prefer to obtain a reworked one and then send in my old core - I have had too many things lost in shipping and center links appears to be a rare item.

Ok (answering my own question) it appears there are no PS center links available from anywhere for a 1955/1956! The only option are remanufacturing services that take 4 weeks and you have to ship your old core for them to reman - and hope it does not get lost or stolen.

The issue I have is the common pitman arm side joint wear. I am contemplating getting the end cut and machined to accept a heavy duty tie rod end - companies for 4x4s make these for jeeps and off-road, just have to figure out the taper used on the pitman arm / enter link joint.

Why do you assume that this is 'common' ? I've never read that before.

If you have excessive wear on the pitman arm, just replace it, rather than trying to customize something. How many miles are you planning to drive your car per year ? If it's less than 10000, just replace the pitman arm. It'll probably be good for many years.

Also, if you can't find a rebuilt center link, you can probably take one off a parts car in a junkyard (they are the same, 55-6 Chrysler and Desoto) and send that in as a rebuildable core.

I don't need a pump. But maybe someone else does.
