How do you polarize the generator? The manual says to "Polarize generator after making all connections, by causing a momentary connection from the starting switch or battery terminal to the generator armature terminal." So do I just get a wire and briefly connect the battery negative terminal (positive ground) to the armature terminal?
Does the generator need to be polarized whenever the battery is disconnected and reconnected? I usually leave the battery disconnected when the car is sitting in the garage. This time the battery did not seem to be charging - it went dead after 10 miles of driving and would not restart the car.
Thank you.
Here is a good tutorial:

Note differences for + and - grounded systems.
Thank you Greg. It looks like you helped to save my battery and a lot of aggravation on my part. Like I mentioned, I like to disconnect the battery - since it is an old car. It does have a 60 year old ignition switch. It is amazing how one can always learn something. I wonder if frequent polarization harms anything.
Good luck on your restoration - I really enjoy the photos. You go about everything in a nice orderly manner so I am sure you will get to where you want the car to be.
OK folks, now I'm really depressed.
If you check your November-December 2012 issue of De Soto Adventures, Volume 27, Number 6, on page number 6, we dealt with this very issue.
As I have stated before, sometimes I feel like a radio talk show host when the phone doesn't ring. Although we have not had very many submissions of Tech Tips from the advisors, we have endeavored to include a tech tip in every issue even if we had to produce them ourselves.
This is just one of the benefits of membership that truly jsutifies the cost.
Happy New Year to You All!

De Soto Adventures Magazine
Sorry to depress you Geoff by not remembering the article. I read everyone of the Desoto Adventures but it was a year ago and I have slept about 365 times since. I am really wondering why I did not have it in my mind that I had read something on the polarization subject and it was in the Club magazine. You have been a real benefit to the club magazine. I just knew that someone on this website would know the answer to my question.
Relax and have a Happy and prosperous New Year.
