Thanks Steve. Will try new condenser this weekend. Reading about how finicky and cheap condensers are I will also not assume just because a new one is in place it is fine. If I find a new one hat works well and a spare that also works well, I will cast away the box of condensers of dubious origin I have floating around the shop.
Do you have any ideas on how to test the water pump to be sure it is circulating properly?
I plan to check the gauge temperature vs. actual using an IR gun to be sure the gauge is not grossly under reporting block temperature. But I have never seen "steaming" to indicate true overheating, just poor ignition and loss of power when its run awhile.
So I checked the temperature between the gauge and a thermometer and an IR gun and concluded the engine is not overheating under load. Ran it for about 30 minutes. Sputtered momentarily twice under almost full throttle uphill. Otherwise ran great. Still nervous or distrusting of it. Checked coil temperature and it was about 100F on the case. I am wondering if there is any value in getting one of those "hot" coils that are available that supposedly up the voltage to the spark plugs (Pertronix?). System is still 6v Pos Grnd. Away from it the next couple weeks, when I go back to it, I will try the new condensor.
