Fantastic progress and results in such a short period of time. Looks like it's all down hill from here.
Congrats!
"It's delightful, it's delovely, it's DeSoto"
William Phillips is a genius.
Nice work! Camping with an old car is a must-do in my opinion.
To tell you the truth I was thinking about finding a cheap shell of my car and turning into a tow behind sleeping quarters. Money after rebuild is prohibited that for now but that would be awesome ????
That would be neat! I think the closest I have seen to something like that with a DeSoto was the guy with a woodie that made a little woodie camper trailer to match.
Usually it a storage trailer and not a camper
How is your car coming along and how was the next show you planned to attend with it?
- So I drove to the Longley dodge car show. It's only 8 miles away but did well. I have made several drives around town and ice cream runs. I made a fan spacer and put on a 6 blade flex fan to help with the warm rear two cylinders. My biggest concern right now is the car dies down under hard acceleration and then recovers. There is also no difference between 1/2 throttle and full throttle. I think I have to disassemble the carb and check it over.
Fan and homemade spacer.
The reason for this was my engine was cooling unevenly. Front 2 cylinders 180, second 2 190 and two rear cylinders were at 210. I installed a gutted thermostat and installed the 6 blade fan that was 6" bigger in diameter. This helped. The way the water pump works on the early cars is it only circulates with the thermostat open. Water flows from rad to inlet of pump. If thermostat is closed no flow. There is no bypass. Early primitive design with no distribution tube. Now it cools much more even.
Glad to see you are working out the bugs! As frustrating as it is, there is always something to fix or tweak after a restoration or major overhaul project.
Looking forward to more updates! You give me encouragement to tackle a project on my DeSoto.
Cleaned out the carb last night and check it over. Readjusted the float and put back on the car. No difference in the hesitation. May have to update the carb. Not sure yet.
That's great to see you out enjoying the car and exposing the younger generation to these cars! Unfortunately, I don't know a lot about the earlier DeSotos to comment on the hesitation. I assume the fuel tank/system is clean and free of debris?
