I've written before about my Desoto's shifting problems. The mechanic and I were convinced the shifting problem was related to the steering column control. We found some play in the shifting system, removed it, and it still won't shift from 3rd to 4th gear. Of course, the problem could be in the gearbox, but I still think it's the steering column shifter. Does anyone know of any common shifting problems that could help me?
I know there was some previous discussion on this topic ( https://desoto.org/community/support-forum/gear-problems/#post-13930). Were you able to confirm what the transmission in your '55 DeSoto is? I'm not as familiar with the Diplomat, but I think Glenn's comment of it likely being a Plymouth 3-speed manual sounds like it may be correct. Knowing what the transmission is (and what domestically-sold US car it compares to) will help with information and suggestions.
