G'day All,

I have recently purchased a '58 Desoto Firesweep fully unrestored imported into Australia.Need some help with a speedometer issue.

While driving the speedo was working, there was a bit of a "clunk" and the speed stopped working.Would this be the cable or some other issue.

Also are there any tips to removing the cable in I need to?

Much appreciate your comments.

Thanks

Steve

Sounds like the cable came off the fitting. You should be able reach up behind the cluster and feel if it's connected or not. If that doesn't work you might have to pull the cluster out (possibly lowering the steering column), to access the back side. Careful not to scratch the paint ????  Beautiful car btw, love the color!  ????

Going off of Bernie's comment, you should be able to also pull the cable most of the way out of the sleeve for inspection if you unscrew it from the speedometer cluster. That would check two possible issues and would probably be a good time to re-lubricate the cable anyways. If everything seems to be okay and reassembling makes no difference, perhaps a gear inside the speedometer housing failed.

@stevesaunders I was able to pick up speedometer cable lubricant at my local parts store. I believe it's often graphite-based.
