I had a new one and the (alleged) "auto glass guy" cracked it! I can't seem to locate another. Any ideas where to look?
It's been a very trying day.........

That's interesting. I was under the impression the 2 door hard tops were different glass than the four door posts.

Steve,

I believe the convertible windshield is different from the sedans and hardtops. If I read the book correctly, the sedans and hardtops interchange. These came with or without Solex glass. I don't think most people would notice the difference in the windshield if it were Solex and the other glass was not. I would make sure the seller on ebay knows exactly what he is selling and would try to confirm what I am saying about the interchangeability of these windshields. Did you find the proper seals for your windows?

Mac

I was going to intuitively agree with you Steve, but then I thought "wait a minute, I have an interchange manual around here somewhere..."

Somebody else might confirm for me, but the '50-'65 Chrysler Interchange Manual I have says that the front glass is the same across all body styles for '55-56 Chrysler and DeSoto except convertible. WAGS # is 391

For the back glass, the sedan, 2 door hardtop, 4 door hardtop, and stationwagon (duh) all have unique part #s, however they are still shared with their Chrysler counterpart.

It's supposed to be fun!

Hi Mac & Tim: It looks like you are correct. Same windshield glass for all 55 & 56 DeSoto and Chrysler EXCEPT for convertible. I was able to purchase a windshield from Bob's Classic Auto Glass. (much less expensive than the above ebay auction) Dustin was very helpful, but he warned me that this is the only one they have left in stock.

I need to find an (old) glass guy who is familiar with the installation of these. I had no problem at all doing the back glass myself today, but yesterday tried to help the guy who broke my windshield. He tried to "Rope it in" first with the gasket installed around the glass, but the clearance between the defrost deflector in front of the glass was way to tight to allow this method to work. We then went to the factory service manual and it says to install the gasket on the pinch weld, push the glass into the top channel first, then work the gasket around the sides and bottom. When we tried this method, we kept pushing the bottom part of the gasket off the pinch weld while trying to get the gasket lip up over the bottom of the glass. Any suggestions?

Steve

BTW: I was able to get the stainless trim around the rear window despite using the Bernbaum gasket. Something is a little different about the shape of this gasket, and I'm worried about the top trim coming off in the wind. I MAY get a few #6 stainless screws and drill two holes through the stainless and the pinch weld - securing the stainless with the small screws. I hate to do this, but it would be better than losing these pieces on the road!

Steve, Try this one. They had nice 53 windshields back in "05. I really do not know what they have now. I have other sources I have collected off this website and other places. You can email me at pmurko@cox.net and I can send you my list of Suppliers/Vendors.

ProSource Glass International From 9/12/05 e-mail I believe they have decent Desoto replacement windshields.

Yeh it is quite the Supplier/Vendor list. I say that so everyone knows what the list is. I have been adding to it for maybe 12+ years. I gave it to the NDC some years back but the list was seriously reduced in size. It is available to anyone that wants it. It requires some sorting out in the sense that I do not know which companies are still out there. Feedback would be be good so the older entries can be updated and ones no longer around can be eliminated. I have not needed many parts lately so I do not keep on top of who is still around and who isn't - hopefully most.
