Howdy, De Soto Folks,
I'm in the process of winding up the July/August issue of our De Soto Adventures which is celebrating the 75th birthday of the 1940 S-7 De Sotos. During my info search, I came up with an A.E.A Tune Up Chart for the S-7's. Looking ahead to next year's issue, I was able to find those charts for the S-8 (41) and the S-10 (42).
Does anybody know what happened to the S-9?
I am hoping someone can supply that info to save me a lot of digging and Googling.
Thanks in advance for your assistance (and wisdom)
Geoff

Geoff;

I have two metal boxes with tune-up charts that I was able to procure after I got a Sun distributor machine. Mostly they're from the 60s. However, there was a Chilton Service Handbook. Here's a scan of the cover and also the page pertinent to the S-9

Is this the info you're looking for?

It's supposed to be fun!

That could be handy but my curiosity drives me to find out why DeSoto seemingly skipped the "S-9" model designation between the 1941 S-8 and the 1942 S-10.
Was "S-9" some kind of demonic symbol or was there an S-9 design that was scrapped for the 1942 S-10 designation. It becomes curiouser and curioser!?!?!

Oh! You're not so much looking for the tune-up specs as you are looking for why the gap in the designation?

It's supposed to be fun!

Going back through all of the models covered in the "Standard Catalog of Chrysler 1924-1990", I can't find any reason for the number "9" wouldn't be used by De Soto.
My question still remains: "Was there an S-9 design that was "bumped" by a newer, up-to-date "S-10" styling? The basic body "look" doesn't look all that different from 1941 to 1942.
Maybe we'll never know.

Don Butler's The Plymouth and DeSoto Story does not mention a model S-9 either. Just the S-8 in 1941 and the S-10 in 1942. Interesting

A good research project would be to plot S-1 through S-27 by year as Desoto was not consistent from year to year.

The S-11 was forever, some year they used different Ss for the Custom and for the Deluxe, the 51 and the 52 had the same S.....

Perhaps S-8 for Deluxe and S-9 for Custom? Just a thought....
