John

To about 1950'ish the stamped number on The Engine Block was the number
used by all Department of Transportation and etc.

Look at a machined pad that is located on the same side as The Starter and Generator on the block. This pad is "sort of" behind the Generator and will
be dirty and hard to read.

The first is a Alpha Letter. "S" is De Soto and "C" is Chrysler.

The second is a Number. It is "_____"

The third set of Numbers is for That Car.

All of this is close to true ---- if the engine is still the original.

You're not going to find matching numbers. The closest you're going to get is S-3 stamped on top of the block near the water pump. Gimme the engine number and I'll tell you if it is right. And I disagree with Roger:) States determined which number was on the title. Very often it was the serial number, not the engine number.

BTW, I have an original '37 DeSoto shop manual which I'd like to trade for a '36 Shop manual.

Have a nice day
Steve
