I need a starter solenoid for my 47, It is the one with the square top. I have one of the other ones that are round. Mine has one more wire on it. Can the round one be made to work on my car?.

Paul - The solenoid in my 48 shorted and I took the starter and solenoid to a long-time starter guy in Oklahoma City. We both did google searches and didn't find one so he mounted a Chevy 6 volt solenoid on the starter. It required a separate relay that I mounted on the inside fender. It works great and was cheap. The solenoid and relay together was about $50.
If you do it this way you will have an extra wire. That wire goes to the generator armature and grounded the solenoid. When the generator starts charging then it ungrounds the solenoid. At least that is what I got from my starter guy. It sounded like a safety device in case the button was pushed while the engine was running. My new installation does not use it so I disconnected it from the generator and tied it off. I didn't remove it from the wire bundle in case I ever find an original solenoid.

I went to a NAPA store and told them I needed a 6 volt starter relay, but for no particular car. He sold me a generic relay. I don't have a diagram but will try to post a photo from my cell phone. The car is stored about 5 miles away. I will try to go there today and take some photos.

I tried to take photos of the solenoid installation, but there are too many obstructions and the lighting is poor. It looks like you might be able to get a square solenoid. If that doesn't work out, I can draw the wiring diagram. It won't be beautiful, but it will be readable.
