Right, Wrong or indifferent, this is how my jack is in my '56. Do you have that little piece that fits in the BIG hole in the center of the rim? It "looks" like the base and the handle are just laying in there. No "real" place for them. The rag is protecting the white wall. You can't see the jack base, it is hidden behind the fuel tube. That is all I can add to this...

There is a hole on the jack base, not the one on the middle, but on the end. This hole goes over the bolt so the base acts as a washer. Try it and I think you'll see how it goes. Whether you like it or not, Jim has the tire in the hole the correct way.
