1956 Sporteman S-23, 4 door hardtop
Mike,
Remember that Sportsman was the name of a body type, and not the name of a model. From 1950 to 1959, all De Sotos that were Sportsman were hardtops. You could have a Custom Sportsman, a FireDome Sportsman (1952 - 1954) or a Firedome Sportsman (1955 - 1959), a Fireflite Sportsman, or a Firesweep Sportsman. From 1950 to 1955, all Sportsmans were two-door hardtops, but starting in 1956, you could have either a two-door Sportsman or a four-door Sportsman.
Not all post-WWII De Soto hardtops were Sportsmans, but all Sportsmans were hardtops. For example, the 1956 Adventurer came only as a two-door hardtop, and the 1956 Firedome Sevilles came as either a two-door hardtop or a four-door hardtop; but none of these were called Sportsmans. (And if you have a pre-WWII Sportsman, you didn't have a hardtop, but you do have a special interior.)
So your S-23 Sportsman is one of 1,645 De Soto Firedome four-door hardtops made that year.
Hope this helps.
