Does anyone know what weight oil is usable in a fluid drive transmission. I have a 52 Desoto custom with the 6 and tip-toe trans, and it will not up shift. The solenoid engages, but the trans doesn't shift. I also noticed oil on the underside of the car around the trans tail shaft. The manual calls for straight 10 weight, which I can't find, so I was wondering what multi grades others may be using?
Welcome to the forum Oliver. You can find 10 wt. non detergent oil at some tractor supply stores. Or, Hydraulic tractor fluid will also work in your fluid drive. Some say not to use it but other "experts" recommend it over 10 wt. oil.I have had it in my 52 for several years and haven't had a problem. It shifts fine. DO NOT use a multi-grade or any detergent oil. Non detergent only.

For The Transmission Part I fully agree with Les.
Do Not use any brand or type of Automatic Transmission Fluid
in The Fluid Drive Unit.

My 53 took straight 10W, non detergent. But it was not easy to find.
Since this keeps coming up, I went through my files and here is the ordering info.

Thanks everyone for your help. I found 10 weight available here in town from a bearing supply company. Oliver
I read somewhere that SAE 10 oil is the same as ISO 32. I don't know if that's true or not, though.
Here's a case of 12 quarts for $40.

Here's 5 gallons for $200

Seems it's the same oil used in compressors and pneumatic devices.
Here's a 55 gallon drum for $800. How much ya need? hahaha

Bearing supply makes a lot of sense. That's a good idea!
