Welcome to the NDC! Nice looking car you have there. If you need any advice, ask away. Someone here will know the answer.
Have a nice day
Steve
Welcome!
It's supposed to be fun!
1949 De Soto Custom Convertible (project)
Debbie: Welcome to the club. The 59 is one of the more popular years and there are a number of 59ers who contribute to the message board
Please ask away..
The NDC is plotting production data for the 59. from your data plate -by the passenger's side hood hinge please advise the 4 numbers by SCH MO which is when your car was made and the VIN which is either M412 or M414 1xxxxx.
M412 is 59 DeSoto Firesweep made in Detroit
M414 is 59 DeSoto Firesweep made in LA (somewhat rarer)
Thanks
Hi Debbie, Welcome to the club! Great looking car you have.
Would you mind letting us know where you live?
I also have a car like yours; one thing you will learn..you don't park it, you dock it!
Bob,
The numbers I found on the Driver door post tag was M414 then under that is 101382
the body buck tag on the passenger side by the hood hinge is as follows:
Schedule: 0717 4049
Model: MSIL
BT: 413
PT: XUU
TR: 333
SP: no code
I appreciate your input and help. I hate to say this but my husband and I have been restoring Mustangs for the last 27 years this is our first desoto.
I see you have a 59 fireflight sportsman.
Who or where is a good place to find parts. I need an air cleaner and passenger side turn signal lens among other items.
Thanks Bob
John and I live in Erie, Pa. "The mistake by the Lake" Actually it is a nice area to live except when you hear that weather forecast of Lake Effect Snow.
I told John when I drive it for the first time, I want him to take me over to the High School parking lot so I can practice first. I am sure it is much different than my 98 lumina!!!!!!
M414- a LA car now on the east coast-there must be a story there

Hopefully you and Stan can bring your cars to the 3D picnic in Cleveland in August
Thanks for the info!
Is there a good book out there on the desoto? I do have the shop manuals.
3D picnic? what is that? and what is the specific date?
The 3D picnic (Delightful, Delovely, DeSoto) is an informal gathering of DeSoto owners in Chagrin Falls, Oh for a hot dog/hamburger picnic. No judging or anything like that, but if the weather is nice, about 20-25 DeSotos show up for a few hours and mingle. It's a GREAT event. I'm in New Castle PA and drive there most years. If the weather ISN'T nice you can still attend and leave the DeSoto home. I'll make sure you get an invitation!
Ed Petrus
Ed,
It sure sounds like a neat picnic to attend. I would like to try to attend that event.
I will say all the swap meets and car shows we attend I have yet to see this body style desoto.
Maybe we could check with each other closer to the event and cruise over together.
thank you for the info.
Deb
Hi Debbie,
It was nice that Ed P. wrote to you even though he's 57 kinda guy.
He's very knowledgeable re: the later 50's Desoto's and could be a valuable source of information for you,et al.
You live in Erie, Ed lives in New Castle and I (we) live in Oakmont, near Pittsburgh. Hopefully, we all get together at a mutually agreeable place sometime this coming summer.
Please send me your E address and I send a picture of my Firesweep to you.
Stan,
That would be nice to try to get together.
Do you attend that 3D picnic?
my e-mail is papony@velocity.net
No, I've never been to that show. Actually, there's quite a few car shows held in W.PA that might interest you. When the time comes, contact Ed P. and I'm sure he'll share the list with you.
Best wishes.
Actually, Debbie, one of the nicest shows in western PA is right by you -- the Tri-State Mopar show in Albion at the fairgrounds. It will be on June 5th this year (1st Sunday in June). I attended for quite a few years, but not for the last several. I'm the choir director at my church, and sometimes I can't get away on a Sunday morning. I "hope" to be there this year. My only problem with the show is that it's a judged event, and I'm not crazy about some of the setups. For example, one year there was a new PT Cruiser in the class with "Woodies". The other cars were true woodies but the PT was just a new fake-wood car. If I attend, I'll do it most likely for the fun and not be judged. Other great shows (my FAVORITE) include the Father's Day show in Hermitage PA. I usually take 3 DeSotos there. Then there's Mopars In The Park in Butler, but I don't know the date yet.
Thanks, Stan, for the nice comments!
Also, Debbie, I contacted John Nosol. He and Leon Haddix are the driving forces behind the 3D picnic. They will be sure you are invited, and will watch for your email address in the Adventures magazine (unless you get it to me directly). You can PM me if you wish at desoto@pathway.net
