Hello all. I am new to your site, and have been a Chrysler and Imperial man all my driving life, which is considerable, and lately a DeSoto has come up, and I am thinking of purchasing it. A 56 4-door Fireflight that is mostly original. Was wondering what to look for. It starts and runs, needs interior work and a little bit of stainless is missing on the back door and quarter. I like the 56, as it is 12 volts and my guess is it is powerflight trans, as two speed. By 56, did the Top line model get the torqueflight? Thanks. All advice and help greatly appreciated. ron
Welcome Ron,
The Powerflite two speed auto transmission was standard on the 56 Fireflite models The three speed Torqueflite transmission was not available on the DeSoto until the 57 model although it did become available during the 56 model year on some Chryslers and Imperials. The Fireflite was comparable to the Chrysler New Yorker with many interchangeable parts. Missing trim parts will have to come from donor cars or places like ebay. The trim is different between the cars with the color sweep and those without the sweep. I would do a thorough inspection for any rust issues prior to purchacing.

Agree with Mac. The '56 DeSoto has no mechanical weak spots. Always beware of body rust in rear quarters and inner/outer rockers. Rust belt cars are known for frame rust especially in the rear. I had a '56 Fireflite sedan parts car but not sure exactly what's left. What trim do you need?
Good Luck
Steve

We've had a 2 dr '56 Fireflite for about 8 years now and its been a great car. As others have mentioned, make sure its mostly there because body parts have no reproductions available. Make sure the drive shaft brake works because there is no park with the 2 speed unit, the transmission should shift from L to H around 20-25 mph under normal acceleration and be very smooth. If possible put it up on a lift and make sure there isn't any undue chassis rust. The motor is very durable, mine has 85,000 miles on it and still runs strong. Check the dog leg of the rear doors for rust as well. They are great driving cars and not something you'll have 20 of at the next car show.
