When I purchased my car, all the brake cylinders were leaking, so I'm doing a complete overhaul on the brake system with new cylinders, shoes, hoses and return springs and am curious about the adjustment of the eccentric pins where the shoes pivot. Upon dissasembly, the pins were set with the arrows positioned the way the service manual says the initial setting should be. My drums are in good condition with very little wear. I don't have the special Chrysler tools to do the adjustment of the heel/toe of the shoes. Any suggestions on how to procede would be appreciated.

Here's a good explanation of the procedure.

Hi Tim, Thanks for the link. I got the brake job done tonight, and the car stops pretty well. I'm thankful that the master cylinder seems to work alright....

Tim, does this procedure change a lot for a "53? Or maybe the site has it for a "53 also?

My understanding is this procedure will work on most Mopars up until they came out with self adjusting brakes but check your manual to be sure. This procedure works better than winging it when you don't have the special tool. I've used it with good results on my 57. (I since have replaced my rear axle with one out of a 66 full sized Dodge to get away from the pressed on drums and to change the ratio from the stock one to a more comfortable 2.92 plus I now have self adjusting brakes.)

The procedure should work on '55 and earlier DeSotos. In '56 they switched to "center plane" brakes.

Have a nice day
Steve
