I'm getting ready to paint my Suburban, I hope, and need to find an original example to do it correctly. They were two toned but I've seen several different ways the colors were split in the door jam area. All of them were repainted cars. Plus the trunk area apparently was painted a tan color no matter what the exterior colors were. So if anyone knows of an original or correctly repainted example is I'd love to see it.

What year and what color? My cousins have a '50 'Burban that's been stored (indoors) since '64.
Have a nice day
Steve
I have two 47's. One is the two tone brown and gold. This one has the door jams painted the top color. The two tome blue has the dark bottom color on the door jams. Guess it don't really matter.
It is not a DeSoto, but it is a Chrysler product.
I have a 1950 Imperial Deluxe which is 2 tone painted from the factory. It is Scotch green/Fog green and the door jambs are painted the same way the car is, top half one color, bottom the other. The belt molding is the dividing line. The trunk interior is painted grey throughout.
Hope this helps
Chris
Guess I should have said but it's a 47 and it's brown and gold. I have a feeling the correct way is to have the bottom color painted all the way up on the door jams. Yes, it doesn't make sense since you can see parts of the jam around the door frame. Who knows, maybe they were painted both ways.

Tim, since you have one the same color as my brown and gold, you could just repeat the same scheme that is on mine. Tan on top and the door jams with remainder the gold.
Are your cars original paint-wise? What color is the trunk area painted? I'm pretty sure the floor, spare holder and well, hinge, supports and lid edge are painted a medium brown. Are the bolts holding the inner fenders to the top edge of the fenders painted or were they installed after paint?

I don't have any specific info other than some unsolicited commentary....
From a production standpoint, it wouldn't surprise me at all that the whole car was painted the base color and then the tu-tone was put on top of that color, with a minimal amount of masking in the jamb areas to carry the tu-tone into the jamb. It's highly unlikely that they would have spent any amount of time protecting the jambs from overspray, and the lines would likely be somewhat vague.
It's us enthusiasts that are making sure the lines are just so now-a-days........
It's supposed to be fun!

Cars are original paint. Tan is on the door jambs and trunk. inside the back is the medium brown almost like a mix of the gold and brown. Engine compartment continues with the bottom color thru the engine bay. Trunk seal area is the same as the bottom.
The doors themselves have been painted on the jams the top tan color all the way around. Does not appear to be overspray
I enjoy looking at unmolested cars and try to understand how they did things.
So no overspray or any of the 2nd color on the jambs of the doors? What about on the body jambs? Especially on the pillar or the rear door opening area of the body?

As they say "Pictures are worth a thousand words." Any chance you could post pictures of the trunk, body jams and top edge of the front fenders under the hood? The more/closer the better. If I'm going to all this trouble I'd like to do it correctly. I'm getting real close to painting the trunk area. I still need to repair the wooden base for the 3rd seat that was damaged. It's the same color as the trunk. I was able to match the paint by using the the bottom side of the metal plate from the wooden trunk floor that allows access to the fuel sender.
I agree with Tim, I'm pretty sure the bottom color was painted first then top color done last. I do think there was a certain amount of masking done in the door jam area. I know how the doors were masked because I did some sanding before I stripped them but am uncertain about the other areas since my car had a poor repaint and they did it totally wrong. I'm also pretty sure the trunk was painted before the exterior.

Tim,
I will get photos posted as soon as I can. Might be better sending them directly to you since I will take one of every thing I think you will need. Need to make sure that I have enough light set up so they don't come out dark. It will be of the tan and gold 47 that I have. Will also send some of the blue tone 47 that I have so you can see the different paint schemes. Should get them done in the next few days. I am training four high school kids for the world championships in Sweden coming up so I just need to find the time but I will get them sent. Remember that these are original paint jobs.
