Does anyone know and can tell me what the liner material is that is between each part where they are bolted together for 47 Suburban? I would also like to know if it done the same on a 40 4 door custom?

Any idea where to buy this stuff?

Are you referring to a fabric like material that is often used as an anti squeak?

I have no idea what it is. My 40 Sedan didn't have anything but the welt material in between the fenders during tear down. You would be the one to know though, right Tim!! With your experience rebuilding the cars you have done so well.

Where can I get the same thing for when I assemble the car?

Every once in a while we will find a fabric material between two panels that are bolted together. Frequently they seem to have caused long term problems due to moisture retention between the pieces. With the loving care and attention cars receive after extensive restoration and repair, I don't anticipate it re-causing a problem if it's reinstalled.

If we're thinking of the same stuff, my suggestion would be to go to your favorite fabrics store like JoAnns or Hobby Lobby, or even Wal-Mart and find a lightweight off-white canvas.

It's supposed to be fun!

I used "Gaffer Tape". You can find it on Amazon. It's real close to the original liner but it has the added benefit of being tape so it stays were you want it during assembly. I was amazed when I took my S11 apart. The liner was everywhere. A sign of a well built solid car in my opinion. Add the fact there were 6 fine tread bolts to hold a part on a DeSoto S11 where I found 4 big sheet metal style bolts holding the same part on a 47 Buick I recently worked on and you know why our DeSotos feel so solid. Take the front clip apart on a S11 and you'll know what I mean.

I found an outfit in England that still makes the stuff, but for a different purpose. It is a loose cotton that is tar impregnated. They use it to splice high voltage power lines. I got a set of samples from him as their minimum is large. The samples were enough to do my 1949 Desoto CV. The stuff is just like the original.

I should send the into to the guy that runs Restoration Specialties and he can order some and then sell it to us.

James

James,
While we wait for Restoration to start carrying the material, which I hope they do, can you provide us with the contact information of the company you got your samples from? I have ordered the Gaffer Tape off of Amazon but would like to use the real stuff during my restoration on the 47 Suburban I am working on along side my 40 sedan. Yep, I am taking on two at a time!!! I've got a 2500sqft shop and each one has its own space and racks. Even have their own photo books for tear down as a reference tool. All I need now is a good heater for what we call cold days down here in Texas, you know like a low of 30 and maybe a high of 45 with the exception of the one week in January when we get ice. If we get a dusting of snow here, they shut everything down!! Not like Fort Wayne Indiana where I grew up needing two feet or more!!!! Rub,Rub, rubbing it in!!!!
