Hi everyone, after changing the oil I am getting a leak at the oil filter. It isn't leaking around the rubber gasket but is leaking around the top bolt that you tighten down. It seeps out there and leaks pretty good if you rev it up. I can't figure out how to get it apart to inspect/replace the little gasket in there. From what I can see there isn't much left of the gasket. How do they come apart? At first I thought that there shouldn't be that much pressure in the canister, but I guess if there is 40lbs of oil pressure there is 40lbs. in the canister as well. Maybe I will just try to find another canister or just the top- thanks for any suggestions.

I recently had the oil and filter changed on my 55 and afterward discovered oil puddling under the car when parked in the garage. With a light I could tell the oil was seeping out from the top of the filter housing around around the tightening bolt head. I further tightening the housing down and the seepage stopped. All the oil does not drain back into the engine from the filter and when loosening the housing to change the filter, the remaining oil in the filter will flow out over everything below. It pays to attempt to divert the oil to keep from contaminating all below.

Smear a dab of locktite 518 around under the bolt head right before you tighten it.

I'm going from memory here so I may have to modify my reply after I look at one again. I had the same problem on my 48 Plymouth, I'm going to assume you have the canister filter that sits up top on the left of the engine. You have a bolt, sealing washer, lid, spring, and a cone shaped washer in that order. The washer is pressed,crimped onto the bolt holding it all together. The best way is to turn the assembly upside down and press the bolt out. Hammering it out may work but you are working against that spring plus you may damage the lid. Another way is to hold the washer with some vise grips and try to tread the bolt out. Good luck!

thanks to everyone--You guys are the best, I am just not on top of things like I should be! I went out and re-checked and all I needed to do was retighten the bolt! I was concerned I would distort the top if I over tightened so just didn't get it tight enough. All is well now. Thanks again for your help. Now on to the carb, it is running really rich--It will start with no choke-I guess I will take it apart and check the float level first. Thanks again, Dave
