Hi All. My project is coming along, and I am currently in the process of re-assembling all chassis components. I had a question in regards to Kinpin shimming (steering thrust bearing shim). The 54 Workshop manual states that there should be 0.006 to 0.008 clearance between which can be adjusted using shims. I ordered a new KP set from Bernbaum, and assume I was sent the right one (54, 8cyl w/ ps) I would need about 0.030 to take the play from the steering knuckle (and still have it moving freely). NB I didn't compare the new bearings to my old ones - I will do that tonight
So if my bearings are the same, is there any issue with having shims made up to eliminate that play?
Thanks!

What I've usually found is the knuckle support is worn where the bearing rides on it, sometimes to the point where it becomes concave. I run a file across it until it's smooth then shim until there is the proper clearance. If the knuckle support isn't smooth you'll have too much clearance once weight is put on it. Some king pin kits come with shims, some don't. Call Bernbaum and ask if they have any. You may have to source them elsewhere.
