Hows it going everyone. my name is Chris Gawelko, and soon I will be the proud owner of a 1950 Desoto Deluxe (I believe its a deluxe, the owner isnt sure either). Currently, it needs a rear window, a battery, the tailights, some interior work, and then the right rear wheel cylinder and it will be fine. he started it up for me and everything and it runs awesome. he used to drive it around till the wheel cylinder froze in the open position, thus locking the right rear tire. It has the flat head L6 in it, 3.9L, with the single barrel. But, I have a 400ci big block out of a '70 Charger. eventually ill bore it up to 500ci and stroke it. But once I cant do that L6 anymore, it will be fitted for my big block and converted to 12v. Ill post up some pictures at a later date to help identify its model, but till then I like it as a mystery! Im probably the youngest person to have one of these, and I dont mind that one bit!!
Hope to get to know you all and contribute around here!
~Chris
Hi Chris, welcome to the forum and congratulations on your DeSoto. There are a lot of knowledgeable people in here that will be glad to give you help in getting your car driveable. If I can offer one bit of advice, your 400 cid big block would look much better in Ford or Chevy coupe than in your 50 DeSoto. Les
Chris
From East of you here in Colo Spgs I too
say Welcome To Here.
The 400 in the 70 Charger is already an
Engine tha thas been around since they
started live for the 1972 production year.
Les is vey correct.
I have a 1947 De Soto which means I
have the same Drive Train as the 1950
De Soto.
You will get more attention if you keep
it Positive Ground and Six Volts.
There is an "I like ole MoPar's" guy in
Calhan-Colo who may have the parts
that you need. If so, use my email
address and I'll conect ya.

Thanks guys!! Ill definately be asking plenty of questions....
First one is, how do you drive the Simplimatic Fluid Drive??
but the big block is for when the L6 isnt enough anymore. but nobody will know its in there till the hood opens (or when the front lifts off the ground a bit
and I mnay only be 19, but im ALLLL mopar. had a modded '74 dart that I used to race with, 2 ramchargers (88 w/ modded 318, and 83 bone stock with 13,000 original miles), my mom had a 99 ram with the 360 but the 46RE blew up, and then my dad had a 98 ram with the 318 and every dealer mod it could have. But some lady in a F150 pulled infront of him on the 303 and he bent her truck into a boomerang and she went to the ER, and his truck drove home without a single wobble or drip, and the insurance totalled it, gave him $8,000 for it and now he has the 2011 Ram with that hemi, and I picked up an exhaust for him to show him a little of what I know and he is LOVING it.
I love to modify and build things. Have been doing it since I was 7 years old lol nothing is safe!!!
Also, I would like to know the pros and cons of the 6v system. Doesnt it attract postively charged particles suck as irons and dusts creating accelerated erosion?
Can't wait to see some photos, or maybe even your car in person some day at a show!
Happy DeSotoing!
Hi Chris,
I just officially joined a few hours ago and I am delighted with the prospect of getting my DeSoto on the road. My gal Alina and I discovered our 1949/50 (we're not sure either) CarryAll in Commerce City, CO while working on a '65 Rambler Marlin we bought from the same person. Well, we would like to try to get this DeSoto running and will try to drive it home to Maine this spring. Meanwhile, you'll probably be fitting in the MoPar 400 in yours. I say, go for it BUT... make sure anything you do to the car you can reverse in case you become DeSoto purest and want to try and bring that inline 6 back to life. Just whatever you do, don;t throw anything away and/or destroy any vintage component s if absolutely do not have to. You neeeeeever know...
Anyway, I am a MoPar fan and also have a '66 Charger as well as a '60 Seneca which are waiting their turn for resto. But my DeSoto is special as my girlfriend fell in love with the car.
I hope we'll meet up at a show or swap meet some day.
Photos of my DeSoto will be post later this year.
Most Sincerely,

Ive decided to keep it as stock as possible. Worth more money that way! lol
Chris, very good decision. The car is worth more money and it is a way more satisfying project to restore it to original rather than cutting it up and modifying it. Hope to see you around Phoenix soon.
Where can I get a sun visor like that one in the photo?

Ralph, there are several of those visors on e-bay. Also, Bob's Classic Auto Glass is reproducing the popular Fulton sun visor. Check out their site. Les
Hello Les and thanks,
I'm looking up the site now. That visor sure makes the car.

Ralph, if you put a visor on the car you might also want to buy a prism that sits on the dash. The one problem with a visor is if you get close to an overhead traffic light it blocks your view. This prism reflects the light so you can see it.You can find those on e-bay for about $13. Not only helps see the light it is a great conversation piece at car shows.
Well from what I hear about the speed of the car, its not like you will be at the front of the line at a light anytime soon! lol plus you can always wait for the guy behind you to honk and then you will know lol!

Maybe I'll just slow down a little and let everyone pass me, and then, when the light turns red, I'll be the first one there.
