So got my Firedome the other day and decided to get it running, while in the states i got it running with a electric fuel pump (and a gas can :) )when i realised mechanical unit wasnt working. I bought another NOS fuel pump which was advertised as being for a 52-56 (with v8), and never got around to changing it before the move.

Today i removed the bad pump and relised the new one has a different arm - doh! Should have checked when i got it! The old one has a 4 7/8 straight arm, where as the one i bought has a bent arm. Everything else will work, it bolts up etc but the arm is in the way. Im assuming the faulty pump is aftermarket as it has no fuel bowl, however i cannot find any brand on it. Both arms are held in by pins that will need to be punched out.

Before i wreck two fuel pumps, has anyone or does anyone know if you can swap pump arms on a nos pump.

Or am i just SOL and have to find another pump...

Cheers!

nevermind, took the old one apart today and there definitly not going to be inerchangable. Damn, now after a nos one with a straight arm! Mopar book says p/n 2279908. I would consider a rebuild kit for the one i took off but cant find a manufacturer on the casting!

i have the same situation. i bought a fuel pump as a spare in the event the old pump was damaged with the new gas formulas.
the present pump has a "straight" arm and the new pump with the glass bowl has the "bent" arm.

i took them to the vendor, plaskin, and he said they will both work.

i haven't tried yet, but so far he hasn't steared me wrong yet.

The same thing happened to me. It seems that you need to have your core rebuilt or the Supplier needs to assure you that they are going to provide the same type of pump. On my 53 V8 the one with the glass bowl shown is supposed to be the right one. The Supplier sent me the other one you show which from what I have figured out is for a six cylinder. It works on the V8 but I wonder if the one with the glass bowl will work better. I am not sure how the arms are but I suspect they are comparable otherwise I would not have installed it. It seems the Suppliers come up with all sorts of combinations. I am very careful now in what I order.

Thanks! The Glass bowl one will definitly not fit to my s19 - the arm hits the cam and wont fit. i will need either a rebuild kit for the straight arm pump or another straight arm pump. Does anyone know where i could find a rebuild kit? My part numbers the ive come up with are either 2279908 or 1637366. I have sent a few emails off to suppliers but i have a feeling once they find out i need it shipped to Aus it goes into the "to hard" basket as i never get any replies!

Ben

I've traded the inconvenience of spending time hunting replacements for the convenience (and incur a slight cost, instead) of paying to have the original correct part rebuilt by a specialist.

No more worrying about correctness and proper function, plus I have a warranty, with new parts that are formulated for todays fuels.

I use Arthur Gould Rebuilders.

I have used Arthur Gould before and they are very good and do excellent work. They had the fuel pump for my straight 8 Imperial. I bought theirs and returned my core to them.I was VERY pleased with what they did for me.

Some pumps have the arm ride on the other side of the cam. So it could maybe possibly be one of those. I got a new replacement pump for my '36 at NAPA with glass bowl and that was the case.

Have a nice day

Ben,

Glad your car arrived safely.

The original part number for your fuel pump was 1485431. This # was superceded by #2279908. In running this number I found "see 1637366". These numbers are for complete fuel pumps.

The book says diaphragm repair kit for pumps stamped with FB-4001 or FB-4002 is part #1450245. For those stamped with M-961-S or M-840-S the repair kit is 1450022.

It may be less costly to first try the repair kit with the shipping cost involved. Hopefully your old pump has the stamping on it.

Mac
