Hello all,
I ihave a 1946 desoto fluid drive S11, how many quarts does the Fluid drive hold? I did like was told and put 10w ND motor oil in but it will not shift now.
I drained all the fluid that was in it out and filled it up I hope with the 10w ND motor oil.
Thanks for the advise before, sorry couldn't respond on the other topic.
Fred
For the Fluid Drive you should have a volumne of 10 1/2 Guarts
gathered before you start. After it all goes in, fill it until it back
pours out the little hole.

Rick: if you filled the coupling until oil comes out of the fill hole it is full. I don't think the coupling would have anything to do with it not shifting. Did it shift ok before changing the fluid? The first thing to check for is to make sure the carb. idle is adjusted properly. The engine has to idle down to about 550 rpms or it won't shift. Check for any disconnected or broken wires or a wire shorted to ground. There is a filter screen that I think you can take out and clean on your 46 without taking the transmission apart but I don't know where it is. If the screen is clogged it won't shift. If all of this doesn't solve the problem there is a electrical/hydraulic check procedure in the service manual. If you don't have a service manual someone might be able to scan that for you. I don't have a working scanner right now so I can't do it. Let us know how you make out. Les
Thanks guys, yes, it shifted fine but was low. I was told to drain it since I had no idea what fluid was in it and fill it with 10w ND motor oil if I couldn't find the #34 hydraulic fluid.
It may not be full yet so I will try to put morre in it.
This old car has only 73, 300 miles on it,,lol, runs great. Still has the owners manual too and picked it up about 9 yrs ago for $1,000. I'm the third owner.
I've been in contact with Ray reis, we have become good friends and he has helped me a lot. He told me to join this.
Thanks again guys for the help.
There is a post on this site that answers all your fluid questions and then some. It is is currently on page 11 and the title is "Fluid Drive on a 47"by Michael Rose. The last post date was Dec. 20, 2010 so flip back to that page. I recently replaced the fluid in a 50 Dodge and the coupling took 7 quarts but yours may be different since this was a simple 3 speed transmission with fluid drive.. I bought the fluid at Granger, $122 for a 5 gallon bucket!! There is a guy on the WPC club classified section that sells fluid drive fluid but I have no idea what is. There are a lot of different opinions on what to put into a coupling. I went with the stuff recommended on the post mentioned above since is was as close to original as you can get these days. One more thought, if you think the transmission is slipping and the cause may be low fluid in the coupling be aware that it may actually be the clutch itself. I also put a clutch in the Dodge because it was slipping in 3rd after it got hot. Oil from numerous sources got on the disc.
