I have a 1948 S11 and recently had the head gasket replaced. My mechanic asked if this was the right one. He said it just didn't look right. However he was able to get it put on. Turns out it didn't last and does appear to be the wrong one. I ordered it from Andy Bernbaum Auto parts. I was told some time ago that DeSotos often had Dodge engines. I was also told my engine s/n 248236 was in fact a Dodge engine. Andy Bernbaum parts book has a different head gasket for a Dodge engine. Can anyone verify that this is indeed a Dodge engine by the serial number?

On the left front side of The Engine Block slightly above The Generator is a
machined pad with a letter and numbers stamped into it.
With out to much thinking a "C" means the block was originally for a Chrysler.
A "S" is for De Soto. I am stopping here because both of the engines are 25
inch looong blocks and both use the same set of Pistons/ Rings - Bearings - Intake/
Exhaust Manifolds - Gaskets - and a whole bunch of other parts.
The 248236 Number should be first with some type of a Stamped Letter ( S11 -
###### ). If it is a 21 inch Head/ Block then it is a Dodge or Plymouth
engine that was placed in the 1948 S11 by some one other than De Soto
To answer to your question --- what is the stamped information before those
stamped numbers.`

Thanks Rodger,
On my engine is stamped S11 248236. The head is 25 1/2 in. long. The S11 makes it a no brainer, it is a Desoto engine.
