I am more of a Dodge person, but have a Desoto engine in a Dodge truck that I need to ask some questions about. This truck would have had a 265 in it, and that is what I thought I had.
The engine # is S13-70478, and the # is located on the surface under the head, and not on the flat surface on the block side. Also after that (in small numbers) is 010.
Block casting # 1138129-1 ---- Date 1- 28 49
Head casting # 1313825-2 ?????
I assume this block started as a 1949 237 which would have a 3.438” bore, 4.25” stroke, and have 236.7 CID
In addition to that, to the right of the raised area is an area that has been ground off flat that has 060 F44690 stamped in it.
Block now mic's out to 3.5+ bore, and has a 4.5” stroke. So it is now is a 260 (259.77 CID)
This would indicate to me that the Desoto block was bored the .010 at the factory, and the .060 sometime afterwords during a rebuild, and a 251 crank was installed.
Or could of this Block been made into a 251 at the factory and used in 1950-51,etc.
What is good logic ??????
Has anyone ever seen anything like the second set of numbers (060 F44690)?
How much can you bore one of these engines? I thought it was a 265, and was going to bore it out.

Thank You for finding this site and seeking help.
I'll make it easy for me to explain what I know. The S-13 equals to a 1949
236 cubed Engine.
1a. Find any Chrysler or De Soto 251 Crank Shaft and Rods and they will
fit to a "236 Piston" with no machining. The 1946 to 1950 236 Cubes become
251 Cubes.
1b. Find any Chrysler 265 Crank Shaft and Rods and They will fit to a "236
Piston" with no Machining. The 1946 to 1950 236 Cubes become 265 Cubes.
Now you know how the 25 inch long 236 Cubed Engine can be made a larger
cubed engine. Just change The Crank Shaft and matching Rods. All of these engines use the same part numbered pistons.
2. Add to the above some "over-boring" for what ever reasons it was done.
3. The 25 inch long engines of mostly 251 Cubes and a few 265 Cubes
became used in Dodge Trucks ( and Canadian Dodge Cars ) and many other
usages until the end of The 1967 Dodge Truck Production Year.
It is a 1949 De Soto 236 Cubed engine that has been altered to its present way.
If you tell The Clerk at NAPA it is a 1967 Dodge Military 4 X 4 Truck Engine you
can get most of what you need.
The Engine Color should be Chrysler Silver.
I hope this is some help to you. If I said a part of this slightly off, we hope
another steps in.

You have answered a lot of my questions.
I would have rather had the 265 in the truck, but right now I think I am going with new seats, guides, valves, springs, and the rest and end up with a 260 truck.
May look for a 265, or the crank and rods from a 265 so I would end up with a ???(what 271), but availability may be a problem. Have a couple of possibilities.
Will stay with this site, and will post a picture of the truck when done. Hope to have done by Oct 2014.
