Desoto built the famous B-26 Bomber, as most of you know or should know.
How about changing the WELCOME banner from the old vintage bi-wing plane,that has been on the site for about as long as the bi-plane is old, to a new one showing the B-26 Bomber built by Desoto. Being an old Army Air Force historian and enthusiast, I think it would be a good move. What d'u think?

I think DeSoto made fueslage parts for Martin and Boeing. I don't think DeSoto actually made complete aircraft though. There are 2 different B-26 planes and the plane in question is the Martin B-26 Marauderer.

I'll try and find a B-26 picture for you, but I don't know what a .gif is from a pithicanthropuserectus. I'm sure I can get a picture either through some of my aviations books, or perhaps off the internet.

Probably ran better than Alina and my '50 Desoto Carryall.
We won the war (WWII) so I guess they did (and I am still fighting to get our Carry all home).

Great shot of a great plane! Ok, depending on who you asked. A lot of pilots hated it because it was apparantly hard to fly and had several negative names including "The Flying Prostitute" due to it's short wings (no visable means of support). Having said all that it had the lowest loss rate for a bomber, flew tough low level missions and was known for it's ability to take hits. "Flak Bait" 'with over 200 missions, is in the Nat. Air Museum. I built a model of it as a kid after I saw it. DeSoto built the nose, center section and flaps of later B-26's. If you look at the picture, everything forward of the rear turret minus the wings and engines were DeSoto. Ford built the engines. If DeSoto built planes like they built cars it's no wonder they were hard to bring down!

I went online and typed in B-26 Bomber.
The first site came up with a nice picture of a B-26 Model. I forgot the site, but it was the first on I clicked on. The first picture is a nice clean B-26 model. Beside it was: aeb4d-yg.gif
You might check it out. There were other sites showing videos of flying B-26s. They were a neat airplane. We have one here that flys over my house several times
a day during the forest fire season. It makes fire retardent drops on some of the
forest fires we have in the area here in Ea stern Oregon.
I am familiar with the short wings they they had. The saying was "One a day in Tampa Bay", when they were first produced, so the wings were made longer and they became an easier plane to handle. I knew a pilot who flew B-24s that had the famous 'Davis" wing. After his tour on B-24s he switched to the B-26 and thought they flew great, after having flown the B-24s, stating that you just had to have the feel for the B-26s, just like you had to for the B-24s, which he flew on the famous Ploesti Low Level Mission

Not to nit-pick, but I think you may have mixed up the Martin B-26 Marauder with the Douglas B-26 Invader. I'm not aware of any Martin Marauders being used as air tankers, at least not recently. Do to high accident rates, the Martin B-26 was purged from AAF roles in 1947. The Douglas B-26/A-26 has a long history of use as an air tanker. The Douglas Invader was in use up until 1972 by the USAF.
