The one idea we had for getting kids more involved is this- how about a 'kid's choice' trophy at the car show? Let the 'kids' vote on/pick a favorite car. Let them pick the criteria- favorite color, loudest, let them decide. Then let one or perhaps a couple of them (names out of a hat?) get up and award a trophy at the banquet. It would give them something to do at the show and let them participate in what's going on. Maybe a teenager would be willing to 'supervise'.
We had some discussion about getting kids involved in judging on another thread. I suggested having an experienced judge supervise the kids to show them what to look for and they would select a car of their choice. Another idea was to have each child shadow a team of judges to learn what they are looking for and what is original on the cars. Hagerty Insurance has a program that sponsors kids judging at shows and select cars of their choice. I think Hagerty provides t-shirts and hats for the kids. I saw this at a local show and it was neat to watch the kids judging the cars. They seemes to take it very seriously.
Regarding a "Kids Pick" trophy, you may be interested in knowing that the NDC Trustees have been discussing this possibility, and are currently voting on a motion that, if passed, would implement just such an award. If passed, it probably wouldn't take affect until the 2014 convention - this would give us some time to get the word out and build up some interest. (And also figure out all of the details on how best for this to be done!)
