I removed my steering wheel for restoration and did not make any registration marks. I have a photo that shows its approximate location before removal. Is there any method to center the wheel for installation? Doe the steering gear have a visable centering poiint that can be used? I have power steering on 1956.
I hope I dont have to install, remove, install a couple of times to get it centered.
Thanks
Mike D
I'm not familiar with the 56 set up but there are two ways of finding center. Jack up the front wheels or start the car. Gently clamp a pair of vise grips on the shaft. Turn the shaft to full lock both directions counting the turns and taking note of where the pliers stop. The center will be half way in between. A more accurate way is to find the turn signal switch cancel mech on the shaft. It should line up with the center of the switch. Almost forgot the most accurate way. If you can drive the car set the wheel in place and install the nut one turn or so then simply drive the car and move the wheel until it is straight. Best done in a parking lot or quiet road.

I think you'll find that it will only go on one way.on the steering column
you should be able to find a spot that does not have a spline on it and
the steering wheel should have a little bump on the inside that would fit
the column that doesn't have the spline
