Hi: I recently acquired a 1946 De Soto Custom. There are two issues I need to address before getting her licensed:
1. Carburetor rebuild: The carb is a Carter # 6-431. Also has some script on the side indicating it is a Ball & Ball manufactured for Chrysler. I assume this means it is a Carter BB carburetor. Classic Car kits indicates the carburetor for a 46 is a Carter BB # EL1. Can anyone tell me if the rebuild kit from Classic Car Kits is correct for my De Soto?
2. Tires: Existing bias tires have great tread but the sidewalls are badly cracked. Like to replace with radials that have a 2 1/2 to 3 inch whitewall. Vehicle still has the original rims and it would appear the originally recommended tire size was 6.5 x 15 bias ply. Diamond Back are recommending either a 700R15 or 225/75R15; Any suggestions?
Thanks - Gary Hammond

Thank You for buying the De Soto and Welcome to here.
For now I will address your Tyre Question.
Take the tire all mounted to the rim to any Tire Shop in
your area and ask the place that if they sold you a Radial
Tire to replace the old bias tire, what would the new tire
size be. This is the important part because the tires
diameter is related to the Speed Meter and the RPM's of
the engine at Hwy Speeds.
Once you find the correct size of the tire diameter and the
width to properly match the width of the rim, then it is easy
to look for a White Wall Stripe Width. Also please note to look
for the era Sales Brochures to see just how many De Soto's
of any Model or Trim Level had White Wall Tires.
As a starting hint look at the 205 X 75 X 15's. The size of the
Stripe looks correct at 35 MPH.
Is your car with or with-out the M-6 Simi-Automatic Transmission ?
This is a Carb related question for they are different.
A look at ... 46-48chryslers@yahoogroups.com will show you the
higher marketed MoPar's sold just after WWII. The Windsor Series
is a S-11 De Soto with 251 Cubes and different trim.

Gary, I bought a carb rebuild kit from NAPA for my 1952. My local store had one in stock but you may have to order it. I am not familiar with Classic Car Kits so I can't comment on that. Tires: Coker says the correct radial for your 46 is 205/75 15. Pricing looks about the same from Coker or Diamond Back. I put Cokers on my 52 last year. I opted for a 1 3/4" wide WW because they were a special for about $50 a tire less than the 2 1/2". Don't know if this info helps. But, welcome to the forum and can you post some pics of your car?
