I'm John Boyd from San Diego. My brother Phil and I recently got a 53 Firedome wagon. Looking forward to getting to know some of the club members as we fix it up. Goals not totally clear yet; we plan to start by making it more drivable. Immediate issue is very loose steering and leaking steering gear. I'm thinking a send-away rebuild. Any recommendations?
We have poured about a pint of Lucas stop leak into the pump reservoir. Most of that is on the garage floor.
We put some pictures and a few notes of progress on a web log at http://jeb53desoto.blogspot.com/ if anyone cares to take a look.

Welcome John. I have a 53 Sedan and can help out with questions on parts and operation/maintenance or you can contact the technical advisor for 53. I believe they are listed under Resources off to your left. From what I saw your car looks like it is in real good shape with all 11 teeth in place. One thing I have recently found out is that there are a lot of old classic cars in Texas salvage yards. Do a google search for them.
Welcome, John!
That's a great, old DeSoto that you have!
Gotta love those grilles!
Congratulations!
Wagons Rule! I also have a 53 Wagon. Fully functional, I've gone through most of the mechanics. Original, rough, interior. Currently off the road for budgetary reasons but a blast to drive. Mine is 95% original so if you need any pics of what was originally on it, just let me know. I used to have all my research pics online but now I'll have to post or email them individually.
My 53 Firedome Estate is missing a rear license plate bracket and lamp. Anyone have a photo of what they should look like you can post or email?
Big hot rod and classic car show at Del Mar fairground this weekend. Plan to walk the swap meet for candidate parts. Also looking for an original-type oil bath air cleaner and tailgate Desoto letters.
Thanks.
