I've looked through the service manual and can't find the info I need. On the distributor cap which is #1? I'm putting new plug wires on and my helper removed all the old ones without marking anything or making any notes. sigh!
I think there's a drawing of the firing order (maybe in the electrical/tune up area?)showing the front-most post on the cap as being #1. Originally, the boot for number one was red, to distinguish it from the other 7.
I looked for a picture for you, but came up empty.
It's supposed to be fun!

Right now number one could be anywhere. So you need to find it! Pull the plugs, except for number 1, and rotate the engine around by turning the fan. Make sure no one hits the starter while you're ahold of the fan! Once you feel the compression building up in #1 continue to rotate the fan a little until the timing marks come up to TDC. Look at your distributor and the rotor will be pointing at number 1.
Good Luck

Now I know why I love to work on my Model Ford.
yeah, your helper needs to have his knuckles rapped for not documenting anything prior to tear down!

I'd rather be lucky than good !
It is worth a try to consider the post closest to the front of the car as #1. If it ran before, and this is correct, it will run again. If not, it will cough and sputter like crazy and you'll know it's wrong!
