I just put a dual chamber master cyl from a 76 dodge/plymouth (drum brakes) on my 55 desoto. had to adjust the pedal plunger 3/8 inch and ran new lines but it is sweet. I drilled and tapped the front end of the cyl. for the brake light switch.(carefully dissass. it and cleaned it out like a surgeon). I got the info from AAJ brakes Portland, Or. (Roger 503-890-1469)who sent me a picture. He makes disc conversions pretty cheap. let me know if anyone wants copies of the info. the m/c bolts right up to the same place as the old one. dave allard arthur2@comcast.net

Did your 55 DeSoto have power brakes? If so, does it still have power brakes? I ask this because the 55 DeSoto power brake unit is made from unobtanium.

Could you post a picture?

Thanks
Steve

Oh, sorry. My DeSoto has drum brakes and I didn't change them. on power brakes..I don't know what you'd use for ..maybe use the p/b setup entire from the 76 era.
So, again, I removed the 4 bolt master cyl. from my car and bolted on to the same mounts, the dual port Master cyl. (mfg. part # MC36460 interchange #M83022) after adjusting the pump plunger rod and drilling and tapping the front of the cylinder for the brake switch. I plugged the top port of the brass 4 way dist. valve on the frame and ran front brake lines there and reran the rear main line direct to the the M/C. I'd like to switch to front discs and may yet but if I do I'll need to install a proportioning valve. I'll take a picture later. dave

update. I just bled the whole system again and found that I should have left the pump plunger length alone..I ran it back out that 3/8 inch and now have good-firm pedal. dave

Having the extra safety with a dual line system is good to know about. Can you give us the specific part # for the dual master.

On 55 power brakes, they can be successfully rebuilt using an available new rubber kit which includes the seal for the master cylinder piston rod. You may need to have the chrome master cylinder plunger replated to complete the job.

The rubber kit is available from a member of the WPC (Chrysler) Club.
